Profile America — Monday, August 31st. Nineteen-year-old Jim Casey had an idea. So, this month in 1907, he and a friend borrowed $100. With it, they started a delivery service in Seattle called the American Messenger Service. It was the first to consolidate deliveries to the same street on one truck. In the 1920s, the growing firm painted its trucks a rich brown. Today, known as the United Parcel Service, its trucks are still brown. It is the largest package delivery company, handling 15 million packages a day in more than 200 countries around the world. The speedy delivery of small packages is a highly competitive, almost $61 billion a year business. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureauonline at <www>.
