Profile America — Friday, August 21st. What had been the territory of Hawaii became the nation’s 50th state on this date 50 years ago. For most Americans on the mainland, Hawaii is the ultimate vacation, with its lovely scenery and average annual temperature in the 70s. Tourism, defense and agricultural products, such as coffee, sugar cane and pineapples, are the mainstays of the economy. Hawaii is the southernmost state and the only one that is entirely tropical. It is also the only state that has a statewide unified school system. One-point-three million people are lucky enough to call Hawaii home — half of them Asian, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander.
