Words Really Do Hurt
April 2, 2010 -- Sticks and stones may break your bones, but words can hurt you too, according to new research. A new study suggests merely saying, "This may hurt a bit," before receiving a shot may be enough to trigger a pain response in the brain long before any actual pain is felt. Researchers found hearing words that describe pain -- such as "excruciating" or "grueling" -- activated the areas of the brain that process the corresponding sensation. "These findings show that words alone are capable of activating our pain matrix," says researcher Thomas Weiss, a professor at the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, in Germany, in a news release. "Even verbal stimuli lead to reactions in certain areas of the brain.? In the study, published in Pain, researchers used functional magnetic resonance tomography (fMRI) to examine how 16 healthy people processed words associated with experiencing pain. The brain scans revealed which parts of the brain were activated in response to hearing the words. In the first experiment, researchers asked the participants to imagine situations that corresponded with words associated with pain -- such as "excruciating," "paralyzing," and "grueling" -- as well as negative but non-pain associated words such as "dirty" and "disgusting" and neutral and positive words. In the second experiment, the participants read the same words but were distracted by a brainteaser. The results showed that in both cases there was a clear response in the brain's pain-processing centers with the words associated with pain, but there was no such activity pattern in response to the other words. Researchers say preserving painful experiences as memories in the brain may have been an evolutionary response to allow humans to avoid painful situations that might be dangerous. "However, our results suggest as well that verbal stimuli have a more important meaning than we have thought so far," says Weiss. Researchers say the findings may be especially significant for people with chronic pain disorders who tend to speak a lot about their painful experiences with their health care providers. They say those conversations may intensify the activity of the pain matrix in the brain and intensify the pain experience. Dealing With Chronic Pain? Get Your Personalized health Report

California has two basic drunk driving laws
California has two basic drunk driving laws, found in Vehicle Code section 23152, sections (a) and (b):
* 23152(a) It is a misdemeanor to drive under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
* 23152(b) It is a misdemeanor to drive with .08% or more of alcohol in your blood.
Note: In most cases, both the 23152(a) and (b) offenses will be charged. Even though there is only one act, the law says that a defendant charged with drinking and driving can be convicted of BOTH offenses — but can only be punished for one (the punishments are identical). Vehicle Code section 23153 sets forth the "felony DUI" provisions where an injury results from the drunk driving, while Penal Code sections 191.5 and 192 describe the crime of "vehicular manslaughter" where there is a death.
Procedurally, you should be aware of certain legal rights you have — rights which are commonly ignored by the police:
* There must be legally sufficient facts to constitute "probable cause" to stop, detain and arrest you.
* You should be advised that submission to field sobriety testing and portable field breath testing is not required by law.
* Once arrested, you must be advised of your constitutional rights — the "Miranda" warning — before any further questioning takes place.
* You must be given a choice of breath or blood testing; if you refuse, you must be advised of the legal consequences (the "implied consent" advisement).
* If a breath test is administered at the police station, since the breath sample is not saved, you must be given a chance to obtain a blood sample for later independent testing by your defense attorney.

EEOC claims discrimination by drug treatment center
Saturday, June 14, 2008
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is suing a New Kensington drug treatment center for allegedly discriminating against an employee who is a recovering addict.
According to the lawsuit, an official with Greenbriar Treatment Center fired a full-time intensive treatment counselor after she tested positive for methadone in a random drug test.
The woman, who is not identified in the complaint, told her boss that she had a legal prescription for methadone and that she'd been in a methadone maintenance program since she was hired in September 2002.
She was fired anyway, the lawsuit contends.
Later, when she met her boss to turn in her office keys, he berated her, telling her "she should be ashamed of herself," and that he was considering pressing charges.
The lawsuit asserts a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act, because the woman's past issues of addiction rendered her substantially impaired, and therefore disabled.
The EEOC is seeking to stop Greenbriar from similar future actions, back pay for the woman and compensatory and punitive damages.

New alcohol addiction treatment
or years people suffering from alcohol addiction have turned to AA and local support groups. Now a recent UVa study shows there's a pill already on the market that could help reduce alcohol cravings.
Most people are prescribed the drug topiramate for seizures and migraines. Now one UVa professor says that same pill can help people get rid of the bottle.
No matter how long you've been dependent on alcohol, 1 year or 20 years the drug topiramate has been shown to help reduce alcohol cravings, according to UVa professor Bankole Johnson.
Over a 14 week period close to 500 people participated in an alcohol addiction study. Participants were given 300 milligrams of topiramate every day for 14 weeks.
Professor Johnson says by the end of the program most people had a reduced amount of alcohol cravings.
”It has an effect to cut down craving and it has an effect to actually reduce the amount of alcohol consumed. We also believe it reduces the chances that someone will relapse because it decreased withdrawals symptoms," said Bankole Johnson, UVa Professor of Medicine.
Professor Johnson also says patients have better results when paring the medication with alcohol treatment programs.
UVa researchers are now working on the next step of this study which is creating a lower dosage of topiramate and doing more research on genetic treatment.
Before this medicine can be prescribed for alcohol addiction it must be approved by the FDA, which could take five to ten years.

In most cases there is more to addiction than just drugs and alcohol abuse. For many individuals addiction is a culmination of things, personal, psychological, and emotional. The result of which is a compounded problem primarily treated in alcohol and drug rehab programs. Drug rehab will personalize treatment to make it more specific to meet the varying needs of addiction. We will take a look at a few of these needs in this article.
Personal Needs - There are a million things that can qualify as personal needs. More specifically for this article, personal needs are meant to mean the underlying problems that have lead to addictive practices. These are deeply emotional things. Things like traumatic experiences and physical, emotional, or sexual abuse. To meet the personal needs, more involved drug rehab therapy is provided. This therapy is one-on-one, private and confidential. The addict can work through these underlying things with a licensed therapist. They can have a better understanding why addiction has come into the picture.
Co-Occurring Needs - A dual diagnosis drug rehab facility will treat co-occurring addiction problems. These are things like a psychiatric mood disorder or eating disorder. A dual diagnosis facility will treat these disorders as it coincides with the addiction. For individuals with an undiagnosed psychiatric disorder this is advantageous. The addiction to drugs or alcohol has masked the disorder. Diagnosing the problem of a disorder can be beneficial as to why the individual has turned to drugs or alcohol.
Spiritual Needs - Not all drug rehabs are spiritually based. But for some, rebuilding a spiritual bankruptcy can be needed in overcoming addiction. Usually a 12-step drug rehab will focus on addressing the spiritual needs of the individual. Treatment can involve a number of things to help them reconnect with a higher power. Finding a vital spiritual experience, with the help of drug rehab, can make a large difference in the success of a sober outcome.
Physical Needs - The affects of addiction are physically damaging as well. More and more drug rehabs are turning to physical exercise as a part of treatment. Exercise actually greatly helps to curb cravings. It also deters the thoughts and impulses of addiction. The body creates natural reward pleasures through exercise. When a person enters drug rehab, they can look a little worse for wear. Proper nutrition and exercise can help to address and meet these physical needs. After rehab, it is not uncommon to notice a drastic physical change from addiction to recovery.
Family Needs - Alcohol and drug addiction can affect more than just the individual. Family members and loved ones can also be affected. Family systems therapy as a part of drug rehab is invaluable to them. A lot of the underlying issues of addiction can have a root in family problems. Family systems therapy can help the family to heal from these things. It is also an education for the family, so that they better understand the nature of addiction. The goal is to vest prepare the family to assist their loved one after rehab, and through recovery.
Addressing these needs with drug rehab treatment could be the key to reaching the addict or alcoholic on their level. It shows a more genuine care from the program, and provides them with specific attention. Meeting the addiction needs in alcohol or drug rehab can be the tool to a lasting recovery. This article was provided by Cirque Lodge in Sundance Utah. We hope that this information will help to educate and inspire individuals to seek drug rehab and alcohol treatment.
