Summit Healthcare hosting community health fair

For children, Summit will have a "casting" clinic, an X-ray station for children to learn how to "read" x-rays (spot broken bones), a scavenger hunt (for children and adults) and a Teddy Bear Clinic.
At the Teddy Bear Clinic, children will have the opportunity to experience first-hand what might happen if they visit their doctor or the hospital emergency department.
With the bear as the primary patient, this clinic can help soften the fear and anxiety young children feel when they visit their doctor or hospital by showing them that the hospital and the doctor's office are caring places. Teddy bears that need extra care can be sutured, bandaged or splinted.
Many free health screenings will be available for adults, including a PSA Clinic (prostrate cancer screening) with Dr. Peter Niemczyk (call [928] 537-6949 for an appointment), diabetic foot exams with Dr. Jared Hall, blood pressure checks, blood sugar testing and body fat analysis from Summit Healthcare.
Summit Pain Care Associates will be on site with models of the spine and information on how to help alleviate pain. Internal Medicine Associates will have a table on preventive health care and early detection.
There will be educational booths on back health, diabetes, asthma, sleep apnea, patient safety, home health, infection control, health information management, breast health, childhood immunizations, lactation consulting, weight loss and much more.
The Whiteriver Fire and Rescue Safety Trailer will be on site, as will Show Low EMS and the Lakeside, Show Low and Pinetop fire departments, including "Freddy the Fire Truck."
Also on board will be the Arizona Department of Health State Injury Prevention "SAFE Kids." A "Spot the Tot" demonstration and education will be offered, as well as car seat checks on your existing car seats by technicians from the Pinetop, Lakeside, Show Low and Whiteriver fire departments.
There will be a "brown bag medication review" table with pharmacists from Walgreens and Whiteriver. A brown bag medication review is when you gather all of your current medications and over-the-counter products into a "brown-bag" and show them to your doctor or pharmacist so he/she can look for any potential problems.
The Navajo County Drug Project will be conducting a Drug Dump - this gives any persons with prescription drugs the opportunity to eliminate any outdated items from their possession.
Organizers are very excited about this opportunity. Abuse of prescribed drugs is a larger issue than illegal drugs because they are easier to obtain and are often disposed of through plumbing, possibly contaminating the water supply.
The Drug Dump will provide a safe environment to dispose of drugs and help those who wish to receive treatment for drug abuse with no questions asked and no punishment for possession.
Other participants include Bannon Springs Assisted Living and Memory Care, Navajo County Public Health on Tobacco Cessation, North Country Healthcare, Doctors Health Solutions, Donor Network of Arizona, Miracle Ear, First Things First, Beautiful Beginnings, Dr. Edith Bailey with bike helmet fittings, Dr. Findlay on different types of anesthesia, Elizabeth Ellis, DVM, Arizona Dermatology, Native Air, Summit Healthcare Foundation and the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
